To celebrate Oktoberfest, we’re putting the spotlight on one of our most fascinating breeds in this month’s Behind the Breed - the German Rex. This breed has both beauty and brains exemplified by Kash, our Resident Rex and Style Guru. Kash loves October because it means costumes and tricks for treats! Curious if a German Rex would be the purrfect fit for your home? Let’s dive into what makes this breed so special.
The Original ‘Little Lamb’
The story of the German Rex began in the 1940s in Germany. It is believed that the mother of all German Rex cats was a black and white feral feline. She was found by Dr. Rose Scheuer-Karpin and she named her Lammchen, which means ‘little lamb.’ By crossbreeding Lammchen with her wavy-coated offspring, the first litter of German Rex kittens was born. Officially recognized by the Fédération Internationale Féline in 1982, the German Rex has a distinct place among the nine Rex breeds. Though often confused with the Cornish Rex, these curly cuties stand out with their charm and playful nature.
Social Smarty Cats
Affectionately nicknamed the “Einsteins of the cat world,” German Rex cats are brainy, vocal, and highly trainable. Their lively, friendly disposition makes them great companions for families, kids, seniors, and even well-behaved pups! But don’t let that calm, patient exterior fool you - these kitties thrive on interactive play and crave attention. Leave them alone for too long, and you might find them pawing at your heartstrings for company.
Kash’s favorite products are the ARTistiCAT Scratchers and 2-in-1 Elevated Glass Cat Bowl. He firmly believes that products should be both practical and beautiful. He knows that good design matters - for both humans and felines.
Small but Mighty
While they may be small (measuring around 8-18 inches) they have a striking silhouette. The German Rex boasts long legs, an athletic physique, and a slender, tapered tail. Despite their petite size (typically weighing 4-8 pounds), they’re healthy and robust. Those inquisitive eyes and oversized ears give them an adorable, alert expression that’s hard to resist.
Curly Cuties
What truly sets the German Rex apart is their wavy or curly coat, a result of a natural genetic mutation. Their soft, velvety fur feels luxurious thanks to the absence of guard hairs. The level of curliness, colors, and patterns vary but this breed sheds less than other cats. While they are less likely to trigger allergies, they are not hypoallergenic.
They do require extra care and attention. Their coat is fragile so brush gently with a glove or cloth. Natural oils can build up, leading to a bit of greasiness. This can be resolved by regular baths. Kash loves to wear outfits and sweaters both as a style statement and for additional warmth. Keep in mind, some cats may experience hair loss due to a condition known as Alopecia.
Adopt, don’t shop.
As a brand and fellow cat enthusiasts, we advocate for adopting instead of shopping. However, German Rex cats are rare and are seldom seen in shelters. If you’re considering adding one to your family, make sure to do your homework and choose a reputable breeder.
